Constable Jacqueline George
Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service
Constable Jacqueline (Jackie) George was born in Sarnia, Ontario and is a member
of the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation. She joined the Nishnawbe-Aski Police
Service in April 1999 following training in police administration at Fanshawe
College in London, Ontario and experience as a civilian employee of the RCMP.
After attending the Ontario Police College where she earned her Basic Constable
Training diploma, she was posted to the Wunnumin Lake area, a remote First Nation
350 km north of Sioux Lookout, Ontario.
On her arrival, Constable George soon realized there was lots that could be
done to improve prospects for the youth of the community. But she also realized
there was little in the way of community resources or facilities for her to
work with, so she decided to do it herself. In the short time she has been in
the community she has started a number of activities, such as a Girls Club which
meets at her home, sporting events like boys' baseball and other games that
she becomes personally involved in. She has even used her own funds to buy equipment
and to supply snacks and drinks for events.
Her hard work has gained her the trust of the young people and respect from
the community. She maintains an open line of communication with the Chief and
Council and seeks to involve them with the youth too. She also has a time slot
at the local radio station where she gives public service announcements and
talks about issues relating to crime prevention.
As a police officer, Constable Jackie has promoted the use of restorative justice
and community-based alternatives to incarceration for youth in trouble with
the law. She uses her discretion when dealing with youth, looking for alternatives
to the established court-based system to find appropriate solutions for youth
crime.
Since arriving in the remote community of Wunnumin Lake, Jackie George has
created an atmosphere of harmony and well being with the residents. Her innovative
approach and her personal philosophy reflect a new approach to policingone
that works especially well with young people.
