PSEPC is currently developing Canada’s National Disaster Mitigation Strategy (NDMS). The goals of the strategy are to reduce risks, impact and costs associated with natural disasters, as well as to foster a disaster-resilient society. The strategy aims to encompass structural and non-structural mitigation. Structural mitigation includes such measures as construction of floodways and dykes, and the reinforcement of structures against floods, fires, earthquakes or tornadoes. Non-structural measures include hazard mapping and risk assessments, insurance and public awareness programs, building code enforcement, standards and legislation. The NDMS is based on ongoing collaboration and policy development between federal, provincial and territorial governments.
