Picture identification solution

Title Flood

Images of Solution to Picture ID puzzle: Warm clothing, Personal toiletry, Important documents, Blanket, Non-perishable food, Water-proof garments and footwear, Flashlight, Battery, Battery-powered radio

Correct answers:

  • Battery: You need spare batteries for your flashlight or your battery-powered radio.
  • Flashlight: You need a flashlight in your emergency kit because you might have to cut the power off depending on the extent of the flood. The power might also fail. If there is no power, you will have no light; therefore you will need a flashlight.
  • Battery-powered radio: The battery-powered radio is needed in case there is no electricity. Important information such as the whereabouts of shelters might be given on the radio. It is important to stay informed and to listen to the directions given by the radio station. This will allow the rescue crews to do their jobs better.
  • Personal toiletry: You might have to leave your home during a flood in order to go to a temporary shelter. If so, you will need your soap, tooth brush, etc. Special consideration should be given to the needs of children and persons with disabilities.
  • Blanket: You will need a dry blanket to keep you warm in your house or in a shelter.
  • Water-proof clothing and footwear: You will require waterproof clothing because you might have to go outside or in a flooded area. Waterproof clothing is designed to keep you dry.
  • Warm clothing: A change of clothes is needed in case you have to evacuate.
  • Important documents: Important family documents include: birth certificates, drivers licences (identification cards), and other personal documents. These could be damaged by water if left behind in a flooded area.
  • Water: You always need water. Since your tap water might get contaminated during a flood, it is extremely important that you keep at least 4 litres per day of bottled water for each member of the family.
  • Non-perishable food: Canned goods are the best non-perishable food items to keep at home in case of a flood. Floodwaters could significantly contaminate your perishable food. Do not forget to include a can opener in your kit!
