Ontario and Manitoba sign hydro deal
On October 27, the governments of Manitoba and Ontario signed a $500-million hydro agreement, which will benefit both provinces. Starting in 2006, Ontario will receive 150 megawatts of power from Manitoba. Transmission upgrades and construction of a new generating facility are expected to bring significant economic returns to Manitoba.

Avian Influenza: WHO issues guidance for countries experiencing their first outbreaks of H5N1
On October 27, the World Health Organization issued guiding principles for public health measures in countries experiencing their first outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza. The recommended measures are universal and intended for adaptation to specific situations, in line with national health and veterinary polices.

In brief

Protecting Ontarians against flu
On October 27, Ontario’s Minister of Health and Long-Term Care George Smitherman announced that the Ontario government is encouraging Ontario residents to protect themselves and others by taking advantage of the free flu shots. The shots are once again available  this year through the Ontario’s Universal Influenza Immunization Program.

Cyber risk assessment

Over the course of the past 24 hours, the Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre (CCIRC) has not detected any significant new threats or vulnerabilities.  No significant incidents with the potential to affect critical infrastructure have been reported.  Accordingly, based on the information available to CCIRC, the cyber risk facing Canadian critical infrastructure is assessed as low.  Personnel responsible for information, systems and network security should continue to apply appropriate security precautions and monitor their systems.

Recent cyber alerts and advisories issued by CCIRC can be viewed under “Recent analytical releases” at www.psepc.gc.ca/ccirc.
