DOB05-217 - November 14, 2005 NewsOntario government expanding Community Health Centres On November 10, Ontario’s Minister of Health and Long-Term Care George Smitherman announced that the Ontario government is investing in 22 new Community Health Centres (CHC) and 17 new satellite CHCs across the province to improve access to primary health care. In addition to the new centres and satellite CHCs, existing CHCs across the province will receive extra funding for staffing and program enhancements. This announcement of $74.6 million in funding over three years is the largest-ever expansion of Ontario's Community Health Centre system. (Source: Ontario, November 10, 2005) Click here for the source article Canada and U.S. reach Open-Skies aviation agreement On November 11, federal Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre and International Trade Minister Jim Peterson announced that the governments of Canada and the U.S. have negotiated an "Open Skies" air transport agreement. This expansion of the existing 1995 agreement includes, among other potential benefits, greater access for Canadian passenger and cargo carriers to the U.S. market as a platform for serving third countries. The changes are scheduled to formally come into effect on September 1, 2006. (Source: Transport Canada, November 11, 2005) Click here for the source article In brief E. coli found in North Vancouver drinking water On November 13, E. coli bacteria was found in a drinking water sample from a North Vancouver neighbourhood, which resulted in a boil water advisory affecting more than 500 houses and businesses in the area. Vancouver Coastal Health Authority officials acknowledged that it was possible the sample became contaminated in the lab. More tests are being conducted on the water with results expected within days. No significant incidents with the potential to affect critical infrastructure have been reported. Accordingly, based on the information available to CCIRC, the cyber risk facing Canadian critical infrastructure is assessed as low. Personnel responsible for information, systems and network security should continue to apply appropriate security precautions and monitor their systems. Recent cyber alerts and advisories issued by CCIRC can be viewed under “Recent analytical releases” at www.psepc.gc.ca/ccirc.
