International Pledging Conference on Avian and Human Pandemic Influenza in China
The International Pledging Conference on Avian and Human Pandemic Influenza takes place in Beijing, China, on 17-18 January 2006. The meeting, co-sponsored by the Government of China, the European Commission and the World Bank, aims to secure funding for avian and pandemic influenza control and preparedness. Over 90 countries were invited, as well as 25 organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Speaking at the conference, WHO Director General Dr. Lee Jong-wook emphasized the areas requiring urgent international and national action to fight avian influenza and prepare for a potential pandemic.

The conference is expected to pass the Beijing Declaration, which reflects the will of national governments to fight against avian influenza and to make proposals for establishing joint mechanisms for avian influenza fund management and coordination.
