Project Descriptions:

East Metro Youth Services has received $47,075 to reduce criminality among at-risk youth by enhancing their awareness of risk and protective factors regarding youth violence, and by increasing the ability of youth-serving agencies to work more collaboratively.  The entire project will culminate in a day-long mobilization initiative featuring multiple youth-generated, youth-led workshops and presentations focused on self-development, youth achievement and violence prevention strategies.  For more information contact Ms. Cynthia Booth at: (416) 438-9419, ext. 249.

The Youth Services Steering Committee c/o Elizabeth Fry Society of Peel-Halton has received $39,630 for its project, Police/Youth Relations Survey. This project will attempt to reduce youth criminality by conducting an extensive community-based research project that will attempt to identify issues, concerns and successes related to the relationship between local youth and police.  Research will specifically focus on attitudes, perceptions, needs, and strengths of existing relationships between police and youth. Once completed, this study will then be used to develop new recommendations and strategies to improve positive relationships amongst all stakeholders.  For more information contact Jennifer Speers at: (905) 693-4249.

The Canadian Mental Health Association, Hastings and Prince Edward Branch has received $34,790 for its project, Homelessness Initiative - Women & Girls. In addition to implementing support programs to assist homeless women and women searching for affordable housing, the sponsoring organization will develop an information booklet identifying local resources as well as a list of “approved” landlords who rent safe housing at reasonable rates.  The resource guide will provide information on inappropriate spousal behaviour, tenant rights, emergency phone numbers and local community services.  This project is intended to reduce the number of women and girls living on the streets thereby reducing negative activities that give rise to crime and victimization.  For more information contact Mrs. Diane Poirier at: (613) 969-8874.

With a contribution of $49,354, the East Ottawa Centre for a Healthy Community has developed the No Community Left Behind Project.  The initiative will implement a comprehensive community-based strategy to increase safety among the residents of the Banff/Ledbury neighbourhood in Ottawa.  The project will address issues such as control and prevention of criminal activities, including gang activity, drug trafficking and substance abuse.  For more information contact Ms. Catherine Dubois at: (613) 737-7195, ext.316.

Community Mobilization Program (Phase II) project, sponsored by Nimkii-Naabkawagan Family Crisis Shelter in Sault Ste. Marie, has received $41,200, which will increase the capacity of the Batchewana First Nation community to address the disproportionately high rates of violence and victimization experienced by residents.  The sponsor will implement initiatives designed to increase community awareness regarding the prevalence of crime and family violence, promote the effective use of local programs/resources, and broaden the community partnerships required to effectively address violence, sexual assault and improve victim services.  For more information contact Mrs. Brenda Combs at: (705) 941-9054.

Atikokan Intergenerational Centre for Arts and Alternatives has received $30,000 to implement the Developing Your Creative Side-Program for Geniuses project to increase the capacity of Atikokan, a small remote Northern community, to address the needs of at-risk youth by responding to risk factors such as boredom, negative peer influence and poor decision making, all of which lead to incidences of crime and victimization.  By combining recreational activities, mentorship, educational supports, teambuilding and cultural activities the centre will be able to strengthen the supports within the community for youth who are at-risk of becoming victims or offenders. For more information please contact Ms. Gabrielle Marohnic at: (807) 597-8738.

The Windsor Essex Housing Corporation has received $50,000 for its project, Community Building in Glengarry Court: A Crime Prevention Strategy in Public Housing in Windsor, Ontario.  The overall purpose of this project is to develop a community-driven and coordinated strategy to decrease and prevent crime in Glengarry Court, a social housing development located in downtown Windsor.  Following a comprehensive needs assessment, the sponsoring organization will apply best practices in community mobilization, collaboration, capacity-building and social development strategies related to crime prevention to address the identified issues.  For more information please contact Mr. Michael Pocock at: (519) 254-1681 ext. 261.

With a contribution of $50,000, the Strengthening Hamilton’s Community Initiative (SHCI) has developed the Mobilizing Youth in Community Participation Strategies project. This project will engage youth in the ongoing anti-racism movement in Hamilton.  This project will provide a unique opportunity for youth to impact social development, through two main activities:  a Youth Anti Racism Network (YARN), and a citywide youth anti-racism symposium.  For more information contact Ms. Kathryn King at: (905) 570-0354 ext. 223.
