Project descriptions:
Thirteen organizations in Nunavut have received over $270 000 through the NCPS. Connecting people and strengthening communities are fundamental to crime prevention through social development, and are at the heart of these initiatives. Examples of some projects supported under the Strategy are:

North Baffin Region:
Sponsored by Qaggiq Theatre Company, the project, Crime in our Community: Theatre Workshops and Performances aims to provide a forum for youth to explore social issues in their life.  The project will develop workshops and performances related to social issues, and provide guest speakers to discuss crime-related topics to participants. Overall, the project will cover a wide range of issues such as, bullying; theft and vandalism; domestic abuse; gang activity; sexual assault; and suicide. This project received $27 000. For more information, call: (867) 979-7941.

West Kitikmeot Region:
In partnership with the Nunavut Violence Against Women Working Group, the Qulliit Nunavut Status of Women Council is hosting a symposium, entitled Territorial Symposium on Violence Against Women.  The symposium will bring together representatives from across Nunavut who are currently working on, or are concerned about, the high levels of violence against women. It will help shape the territorial strategy to address violence issues. During the consultative component of this symposium, community members will have an opportunity to review and offer input into various governmental initiatives addressing violence against women. This project received $25 000. For more information, call (867) 979-6690.

Kivalliqi Region:
The Hamlet of Coral Harbour- Justice Committee
has sponsored the project, On the Land Program – Youth and Justice Committee. The Committee will bring at-risk youth on the land, where an integrated program of counselling and traditional skills will be delivered.  Youth will benefit as they gain knowledge from Elders, learn traditional skills, and develop positive life skills. This project has received $9500. For more information, call (867) 925-8010.
