Crime prevention funding for Alberta communities

Edmonton, April 25, 2005 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, along with the Honourable Harvey Cenaiko, Solicitor General for Government of Alberta, announced today more than $2.6 million in support of 67 community-based crime prevention initiatives across Alberta.

“These projects speak to a determination and commitment among the people of Alberta to take action against crime and its causes. The Government of Canada is proud to be supporting and working with Albertans in their efforts to make our communities stronger and safer,” said Minister McLellan.

“These projects take many different approaches to crime prevention, but all have the same goal of making communities safer,” said Alberta Solicitor General Harvey Cenaiko.

Through the National Crime Prevention Strategy (NCPS), the Government of Canada works in partnership with volunteers, academics, governments, community organizations and others to develop, implement and evaluate initiatives which help to prevent crime from happening in the first place. The NCPS helps to demonstrate benefits in enhanced personal and public safety by investing in approaches that help governments and communities deal with the underlying causes of crime and victimization -- things such as family violence, gang recruitment or substance abuse.

The NCPS has identified children, youth, Aboriginal communities and women’s personal security as its four principle priorities. Among the projects being funded in today’s announcement are initiatives to strengthen community networks, identify and develop realistic and relevant prevention measures, and empower individuals to address such problems as violence and drug and alcohol abuse.

As part of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, the NCPS acts as the first link in the Government of Canada’s public safety continuum. Since its launch in June, 1998, the NCPS has worked with its many partners to support more than 5,000 projects nationwide.

In February, 2005, the Government of Canada announced an additional $90 million over the next three years to renew the National Crime Prevention Strategy as a key measure to protect Canadians from crime and increase confidence in the justice system.
