Regional Minister affirms support to Saskatchewan for flooding

June 28, 2005 -- Regional Minister for Saskatchewan and Minister of Finance Ralph Goodale issued the following statement today related to current flood preparations in Saskatchewan:

“As the Regional Minister for Saskatchewan in the Government of Canada, I have been carefully monitoring the flood waters from Alberta as they have moved into Saskatchewan along the Saskatchewan River and toward Cumberland Lake. I applaud and support the efforts being made by provincial government, local governments and individuals as they prepare for waters to peak in the coming week.

I am glad to note that last week, through the National Emergency Stockpiles from Winnipeg, the Government of Canada provided 360 beds, 450 stretchers, and 1,000 blankets to support reception centres in Prince Albert for those being evacuated from the community of Cumberland House.

I have spoken directly to the Mayor of Cumberland House, Dale McAuley, to reassure him and the community of full federal cooperation.

Last week, the Deputy Prime Minister, Anne McLellan, spoke with the Saskatchewan Corrections and Public Safety Minister Peter Prebble to discuss the situation in Saskatchewan and offered any assistance that may be required. In addition, a liaison officer from Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada’s Saskatchewan Regional Office has been on-site at the Provincial Emergency Operations Centre to participate in monitoring events. Our Government Operations Centre will continue to monitor and assess the situation on a 24/7 basis.

Ensuring the safety and security of Canadians is the first priority of the Government of Canada. We encourage all residents at any risk to continue their preparations for possible flooding, and this includes planning ahead and taking sensible precautions.”
