Home Newsroom 2005 News releases (archive) 2005-07-04: Death of an Alberta RCMP officer

Statement from the Honourable Anne McLellan on the death of an Alberta RCMP officer

Edmonton, July 4, 2005 -- “The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed the death of Constable Jose Agostinho today in the line of duty. Cst. Agostinho was a member of the Wetaskiwin Detachment, just south of Edmonton. He had proudly served the RCMP for nine years, and prior to Wetaskiwin was posted in Cold Lake Detachment. He also served in the Canadian Forces. Cst. Agostinho leaves behind a wife and two children.

This event is a sad reminder of the sacrifice and bravery of the men and women who serve in our national police force, and who dedicate their career and their lives to protecting our country and our communities. As Minister responsible for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, I want to express my condolences to the family and friends of Constable Agostinho. This is a sad day for his fellow officers and I know it must be difficult for members of the RCMP’s “K” Division in Alberta.”
