Charlottetown, January 18, 2005 -- Shawn Murphy, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, on behalf of the Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, along with Prince Edward Island Attorney General Mildred Dover, announced today $679,637 in support of 23 community-based crime prevention initiatives. “The Government of Canada is proud to support the efforts of Islanders to make their communities strong and safe,” said Mr. Murphy. “Working together to enhance the well-being of our communities requires commitment, perseverance and resiliency, qualities that are reflected in each and every one of these projects.” “Prince Edward Island is pleased to partner with the Government of Canada in supporting community-based initiatives which focus on crime prevention and social development. By addressing root causes of crime and providing opportunities for leadership development and early intervention, we are creating safer and successful environments for all Islanders,” said Attorney General Mildred Dover. “Each of these initiatives have added significantly to the positive development of Islanders and our communities.” Through the National Crime Prevention Strategy, the Government of Canada is working in partnership with communities, academics, governments, and professional and volunteer sectors to develop projects and partnerships that will prevent crime from happening in the first place. It takes an early-intervention approach to prevention and community safety, supporting grass-roots responses that deal with the underlying causes of crime and victimization, such as family violence, gang recruitment and substance abuse. The National Strategy provides community organizations with financial support, as well as tools, knowledge, and expertise on effective crime prevention activities. Launched in 1998, the National Crime Prevention Strategy has built on the strengths of partnerships to support more than 4,400 projects nationwide. As part of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, the NCPS acts as the first link in the Government of Canada’s public safety continuum. See also:
