National volunteer week and the Federal Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness portfolio

Ottawa,  April 18, 2005 -- The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, the Honourable Anne McLellan, today recognized National Volunteer Week, which is taking place from April 17 to April 23, 2005. Thousands of volunteers assist the department in its mandate to strengthen Canadian communities and the delivery of government programs and services.

“Everyday, citizens volunteer across the country to strengthen our communities. I am pleased to highlight this year’s National Volunteer Week,” said Minister McLellan. “This week recognizes and honours these volunteers, who make this country a better and safer place to live,” she added.

“Volunteers with CSC work closely with offenders and help them bridge the gap between the institution and the community,” said CSC Commissioner Lucie McClung. “On behalf of all Canadians, I want to express my heartfelt thank you to all volunteers for enhancing community safety by helping so many become law-abiding citizens.”

“Volunteers who work with the RCMP to assist our members in delivering services to communities are of incredible importance to us,” said RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli. “These volunteers -- approximately 75,000 strong -- deserve to be recognized and to be thanked for their service to Canadians.”

National Volunteer Week is being celebrated across the country, by governments, communities and most importantly by Canadians helped by volunteerism.
