More than $300,000 in crime prevention funding for Northwest Territories communities

Yellowknife, April 25, 2005 --Today the Honourable Ethel Blondin-Andrew, Minister of State (Northern Development) and Member of Parliament for Western Arctic, on behalf of the Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, along with Don Cooper, Deputy Minister of the Department of Justice, on behalf of the Honourable Brendan Bell, Minister of Justice and Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment announced $305,439 in support of 13 community-based crime prevention initiatives.

“The Government of Canada is proud to support the efforts of Northerners to make their communities strong and safe,” said Minister Blondin-Andrew. “Working together to enhance the well-being of our communities requires commitment, perseverance and resiliency, qualities that are reflected in each and every one of these projects.”

“Youth are not only the future of the NWT, they are an important part of today’s NWT,” said Brendan Bell, Minister of Justice. “I am pleased to see the interest in these projects from the community level. The projects will help our young people deal with community and social concerns before they become criminal issues. This type of proactive work is especially important for children and young adults.”

Through the National Crime Prevention Strategy (NCPS), the Government of Canada works in partnership with governments, volunteers, academics, community organizations and others to develop, implement and test initiatives to stop crime from happening in the first place. The NCPS is investing in, and evaluating, approaches that help Canadians deal with the underlying causes of crime and victimization -- things such as family violence, gang recruitment and substance abuse.

As part of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, the NCPS acts as the first link in the Government of Canada’s public safety continuum. Since its launch in June, 1998, the NCPS has worked with its many partners to support more than 5,000 projects nationwide.

In February, 2005, the Government of Canada announced an additional $90 million over the next three years to renew the National Crime Prevention Strategy as a key measure to protect Canadians from crime and increase confidence in the justice system.
