Government of Canada invests over $1.5 million to prevent crime in New Brunswick communities

Fredericton, May 7, 2005 -- The Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, along with the Honourable Bradley Green, New Brunswick Minister of Justice and Attorney General, announced today more than $1.5 million in support of 50 community-based crime prevention initiatives.

The announcement took place at the Muriel McQueen Fergusson Centre, and brought together a variety of community organizations working to prevent violence and build safer communities. Fredericton MP and Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs, Andy Scott, was also on hand for the event.

“These projects speak to a determination and commitment among the people of New Brunswick to take action against crime and its causes. The Government of Canada is proud to be supporting and working with New Brunswickers in their efforts to make our communities stronger and safer,” said Minister McLellan. “Working together to enhance the well-being of our communities requires commitment, perseverance and resiliency, qualities that are reflected in each and every one of these projects.”

“These projects take many different approaches to crime prevention, but all have the same goal of making communities safer,” said Minister Green. “The National Crime Prevention Strategy (NCPS) is helping New Brunswickers build safer communities, and the Province of New Brunswick is proud to be a partner in this work.” Minister Green attended on behalf of the Honourable Wayne Steeves, Minister of Public Safety.

Through the NCPS, the Government of Canada works in partnership with volunteers, academics, governments, community organizations and others to develop, implement and evaluate methods which help to prevent crime from happening in the first place.

The NCPS helps to demonstrate benefits in enhanced personal and public safety by investing in approaches that help governments and communities deal with the underlying causes of crime and victimization - such as family violence, gang recruitment or substance abuse.

As part of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, the NCPS acts as the first link in the Government of Canada’s public safety continuum. Since its launch in June, 1998, the NCPS has worked with its many partners to support more than 5000 projects nationwide.

In February, 2005, the Government of Canada announced an additional $90 million over the next three years to renew the National Crime Prevention Strategy as a key measure to protect Canadians from crime and increase confidence in the justice system.
