Government of Canada invests over $1.1 million to prevent crime in Saskatchewan communities

Regina, June 2, 2005 -- More than $1.1 million will be invested across Saskatchewan in support of 29 community-based crime prevention initiatives through the National Crime Prevention Strategy (NCPS). The announcement was made today by Ralph Goodale, Minister of Finance, on behalf of the Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, along with the Honourable Frank Quennell, Saskatchewan Minister of Justice and Attorney General.

"The Government of Canada is committed to building strong communities," said Minister Goodale. "And we are interested in having local citizens make the decisions that result in local solutions. Collaborating with local organizations, communities, and provinces produces the kinds of successes that lead to bright futures and a safer place to call home."

"Healthy communities are built one interaction at a time. Just one moment of caring, in a spirit of respect and hope, can be enough to light the way to a brighter future," said Minister Frank Quennell. "That is why Saskatchewan Justice has made it a priority to partner with communities throughout the province, to support crime prevention projects that enhance existing services."

Through the NCPS, the Government of Canada works in partnership with volunteers, academics, governments, community organizations and other stakeholders to develop, implement and evaluate methods which help to prevent crime from occurring in the first place.

The NCPS helps enhance personal and public safety by investing in approaches that help governments and communities deal with the underlying causes of crime and victimization -- such as family violence, gang recruitment or substance abuse.

As part of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, the NCPS acts as the first link in the Government of Canada's public safety continuum. Since its launch in June, 1998, the NCPS has worked with its many partners to support more than 5000 projects nationwide.

In February, 2005, the Government of Canada announced an additional $90 million over the next three years to renew the National Crime Prevention Strategy as a key measure to protect Canadians from crime and victimization.
