Statement by the Deputy Prime Minister

Ottawa, July 21, 2005 -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, Anne McLellan, today issued this statement relating to the unfolding events in London, UK:

"I was disturbed to hear of a second incident involving London’s transit system, so closely following the tragic events of two weeks ago. Our thoughts continue to be with Londoners during this difficult time.

There is no specific threat against Canada at this time. I would like to assure Canadians that we are remaining vigilant and that Transport Canada, the Government Operations Centre, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), jointly with other law enforcement agencies, are taking appropriate measures to protect Canadians based on ongoing threat assessments.

Transport Canada has contacted transit authorities, ports and airports to ensure they remain in a heightened state of vigilance.

Canadians stand united with the British people, and people around the world in denouncing all acts of violence and terrorism. We continue to take all necessary precautions to minimize the risk Canadians."
