Whitehorse, September 2, 2005 -- On behalf of the Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, the Honourable Larry Bagnell, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources, along with the Honourable Elaine Taylor, Minister of Tourism and Culture, on behalf of the Honourable John Edzerza, Minister of Justice of the Government of Yukon, today announced more than $560,000 in funding to support 20 projects in the Yukon Territory under the Government’s National Crime Prevention Strategy (NCPS). “Living in safe communities is important for all Canadians,” said Mr. Bagnell. “The people of Yukon are coming to grips with difficult and complex problems and events such as this show the dedication of the Government of Canada at addressing the concerns of all Canadians and working together to find solutions.” “The projects that are receiving money from the NCPS are undertaking important work in their communities,” said Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Taylor on behalf of Justice Minister John Edzerza for the Government of Yukon. “They are to be congratulated for helping make Yukon a safer and healthier place to live.” As part of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, the NCPS helps governments and communities demonstrate the benefits of enhanced personal and public safety. This is achieved by investing in approaches that deal with the underlying causes of crime and victimization -- such as violence, or alcohol and substance abuse. The NCPS works in partnership with volunteers, academics, governments, foundations, community organizations and others to develop, implement and evaluate methods which help to prevent crime from happening in the first place. Since its launch in June, 1998, the NCPS has worked with its many partners to support more than 5000 projects nationwide, and has supported 150 projects in the Yukon Territory. In February 2005, the Government of Canada announced an additional $90 million over the next three years to renew the Strategy as a key measure to protect Canadians from crime and victimization.
