Halifax, September 12, 2005 -- Geoff Regan, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans and federal Regional Minister for Nova Scotia, on behalf of the Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, today announced a payment of $6 million to the province of Nova Scotia under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA). This payment is for severe flooding which affected much of mainland Nova Scotia in the spring of 2003. “This is the second contribution by the Government of Canada toward costs incurred by the Province of Nova Scotia to rebuild public infrastructure and repair or replace uninsurable private property damaged by heavy flooding in March 2003,” said Minister Regan. “By working together, the governments of Canada and Nova Scotia are helping many residents, businesses and municipalities recover.” An initial advance of $4 million was paid last year, so this $6 million payment brings the federal contribution to date to $10 million. The province continues to document remaining recovery-related reconstruction and other costs so a final claim can be submitted as soon as possible. Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements are administered federally by Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada. Provincial or territorial governments may request federal assistance toward disaster recovery costs that meet criteria outlined in DFAA guidelines and have been verified by Consulting and Audit Canada. Since the inception of the DFAA in 1970, the Government of Canada has provided more than $1.6 billion to provinces and territories, of which over $18.1 million has been distributed to Nova Scotia.
