Home Newsroom 2005 News releases (archive) 2005-11-07: Government of Canada invests more than $1 million to help build safer communities in British Columbia

Government of Canada invests more than $1 million to help build safer communities in British Columbia

VANCOUVER, November 7, 2005 -- Today, the Honourable Raymond Chan, Minister of State (Multiculturalism) and Member of Parliament for Richmond, on behalf of the Honourable Anne McLellan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, and Susanne Dahlin, from the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, on behalf of the Honourable John Les, BC Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, announced more than $1 million in federal funding to support 28 community-based projects under the National Crime Prevention Strategy (NCPS).

“These projects demonstrate the aspirations of Canadians for safer, stronger communities,” said Minister Chan. “The Government of Canada is proud to sponsor these innovative initiatives-- many of which focus on youth. I know that working together, in partnership, we can help build a future of hope and opportunity.”

“This funding is going to BC communities and organizations that are taking action to address the root causes of crime,” said Minister Les. “We are committed to working with the Government of Canada, local governments, police and the public to support public safety initiatives that operate at the community level.”

As part of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, the National Crime Prevention Centre works in partnership with volunteers, academics, governments, foundations, community organizations and others to develop, implement and evaluate methods which help to prevent crime from happening in the first place.

The Strategy helps enhance personal and public safety by investing in approaches that deal with the underlying causes of crime and victimization-- factors such as family distress, bullying or substance abuse. Launched in 1998, building on the strength of partnerships to support over 5000 projects nationwide, the National Crime Prevention Strategy makes a real difference in the lives of Canadians.

In February 2005, the Government of Canada announced an additional $90 million over three years to renew the NCPS as a key measure to protect Canadians from crime and victimization.
