Home Newsroom 2006 News releases 2006-05-11: Statement from Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day on the death of Constable John Atkinson

Statement from Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day on the death of Constable John Atkinson

May 11, 2006 -- “Today, on behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish to pay tribute to Senior Constable John Atkinson who tragically lost his life while serving the citizens of his community and his country. Constable Atkinson served with the Windsor Police Service for 14 years during which time he was recognized on numerous occasions for his dedication and excellence in police work. Constable Atkinson’s wife and his two children know more than anybody else the high level of commitment he exhibited each and every day.

“On this sad day, we pause and remember the ultimate sacrifice made by Constable Atkinson. It is indeed a sober reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in Canada.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the Atkinson family and to everyone touched by this terrible tragedy.”
