Stockwell Day announces appointments to the National Parole Board

OTTAWA, May 12, 2006 -- The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, today announced the following re-appointments to the National Parole Board for the Ontario and Prairie Regions:

Mr. Wesley Wade Marsden of Roseneath, Ontario, has been re-appointed as a full-time member. Mr. Marsden was first appointed to the Board as a part-time member in March of 2000 then as a full-time member from July 2001 to July 2006.

Mr. Marsden is a lawyer. Prior to his appointment he had been an associate barrister & solicitor with a private law firm specializing in criminal, family, estate and litigation matters before his appointment. He had also worked as a counsel specializing in criminal and aboriginal issues with the Crown Law Office of the Attorney General of Ontario. As well, he had been Chief of the Alderville First Nation.

Mr. Raymond A. Renaud of Orleans, Ontario, has been re-appointed as a part-time member. He has previously served as a part-time member for two terms from April 2000 to April 2006.

Mr. Renaud is a retired Deputy Chief of police of the Ottawa-Carleton Regional Police Department who rose through the ranks of law enforcement to become Chief of Police for the Gloucester Municipal Police Department.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Children’s Aid Society and holds a membership in several provincial, national and international organizations such as the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association.

Mr. David Scott of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan has been re-appointed a part-time member having served a previous term as a part-time member from May 2003 to present. Mr. Scott served a lengthy career in law enforcement culminating in a five-year term as Chief of Police for Saskatoon from June 1996 until his retirement in June of 2001.

Mr. Scott has been an advisory board member of the Prairie Hope Ministries, a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Committee, and an advisor and board member of Addiction Services and a founding member of PRIDE (Parent Resource Information on Drug Education) in Saskatoon.

Mr. John Lindsay, Q.C. of Edmonton, Alberta has been re-appointed as a part‑time member. Mr. Lindsay has served a previous term as a part-time member of the Board from May 2003 to present.

Mr. Lindsay was Chief of Police of the Edmonton Police Service from 1995 to 2000 when he retired in 2001 after a 24-year career in law enforcement. He served as a consultant with the Edmonton Police Commission for a year after his retirement.

Mr. Lindsay was an advisory board member of the Edmonton Centre for Equal Justice, a director of the Canadian Research Institute for Law and the Family, as well as president and vice-president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.

he National Parole Board is an independent tribunal, which makes decisions on the timing and conditions of release of offenders on parole. As part of the criminal justice system, the Board contributes to the protection of society through the timely re-integration of offenders into the community. The Board’s first and foremost consideration in its decision-making is the safety of the public.
