Home Newsroom 2006 News releases 2006-05-15: Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day issues statement on Police Week 2006

Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day issues statement on Police Week 2006

May 15, 2006 -- “Police Week is an important opportunity for us to recognize law enforcement officers in communities across the country who work hard every day to make our families safer, our neighbourhoods stronger and our country more secure. It is a chance for all of us to show our appreciation for these outstanding men and women, who, as we were recently reminded, place their lives on the line every day.

Since becoming Minister of Public Safety, I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting with many officers and seeing first-hand the tremendous work they do. I can truly say that the safety of Canadians is in good hands.

Governments also play an important role. That is why Canada’s new Government has committed to a series of initiatives to support our officers in their efforts to tackle crime. We are putting more police officers on the streets; increasing sentences of violent and repeat offenders; increasing border integrity to keep guns, drugs and criminals out of Canada; and, through community-based crime prevention programs, helping at-risk youth steer away from a life of crime.

There is no task more important to any government than the protection of its citizens. It is because of the commitment, professionalism, and courage of these individuals that make this task possible.

There is much we have done and much more we can do together. I look forward to working with our partners in law enforcement to make our streets safer places in which to live, work and raise our families.”
