Members of the Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security comment on the anti-terrorism arrests made in Toronto

OTTAWA, June 5, 2006 -- "Terrorism is a global phenomenon and a dangerous ideology that in no way reflects the values of Canadian society. Those who subscribe to violent extremism, which inflicts harm on innocent citizens, should be condemned for any attempt to undermine the safety and security of Canadians.

"We reaffirm that acts of terrorism do not reflect the moral principles of our ethnic and religious  based communities.

"The security of Canada is the responsibility of all its residents. We invite all Canadians to fight any expression of intolerance or hate that might lead to hostility or violent extremism.

"Through open dialogue and the exchange of information between the Government of Canada and all Canadians, we can support and strengthen our diverse and pluralistic society, which is founded on the principles of peace, respect for diversity and the rule of law."

The Cross-Cultural Roundtable on Security was created by the government to foster dialogue on security matters. Its fifteen members represent the cultural and religious diversity of Canada.
