July 7, 2006 (Ottawa) -- Today Minister of Public Safety Stockwell Day issued the following statement in response to the announcement in British Columbia of arrests and seizures related to an alleged gun-smuggling ring. This is the latest in a series of successful policing operations aimed at cracking down on organized crime in Canada. “Today’s announcement of arrests and seizures of guns, drugs and proceeds of crime is another example of how federal policing and security forces are teaming up with partners in local, provincial/territorial and international security and law enforcement agencies to help make our communities safer. I would like to applaud the efforts of all those involved in today’s arrests on behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians. The continued success of police agencies in their efforts to crack down on the importation and trade of illegal firearms and drugs is good news for all Canadians and shows that our government’s approach of getting tough on crime is working. Canada has long enjoyed a reputation for being a peaceful and law-abiding nation. It is only through efforts such as those announced today that we can help ensure the continued safety and security of our children, our families and communities. The Government of Canada is committed to delivering the resources necessary to help our nation’s law enforcement agencies keep illegal guns and those that would use them off our streets.” Tackling crime is a government priority. Information on actions to deliver on this priority is available on the web site http://www.tacklingcrime.gc.ca.
