Minister Day commends border services officers for intercepting murder suspects

July 14, 2006 -- Today the Minister of Public Safety, the Honourable Stockwell Day, issued the following statement in response to the interception of two murder suspects by Canada Border Services Agency officers at the Blue Water Bridge border crossing in Point Edward (near Sarnia), Ontario, on July 12, 2006. The two 18-year-old men were wanted in Texas for the murder of a 16-year-old girl.

“The recent interception of two murder suspects by the Canada Border Services Agency is another fine example of the diligence exercised by the officers who protect our borders.

On behalf of the Government of Canada and all Canadians, I would like to congratulate all those involved in this case. By utilizing their skills and training, the officers were able to intercept and identify the wanted men and ultimately return the fugitives to the United States authorities. It is through efforts such as these that we help ensure the continued safety and security of our children, families and communities.”

Tackling crime is a government priority. Information on actions to deliver on this priority is available on the following Web site: www.tacklingcrime.gc.ca.
