Kevin Sorenson announces funding for local crime prevention initiative

Drumheller, AB, July 20, 2006 -- Crowfoot M.P. Kevin Sorenson, on behalf of the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, today announced funding to support the Town of Drumheller’s Community Vitality Project and its ongoing efforts to cut down on vandalism in the community.

“This Government is taking concrete action to tackle crime by encouraging businesses to work with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to strengthen their response to vandalism,” said M.P. Kevin Sorenson. “It will also offer youth a mentorship program to help engage them in the community and provide training opportunities for adults who can then assist youth in turning away from criminal behaviour,” he added.

This project will bring together community groups and businesses to create a vandalism reduction campaign. The initiative includes involving businesses in vandalism prevention strategies, mentorship programs for youth and support for youth struggling with life issues. The Government will be contributing $62,000 to the project.

"Our funding partnership with the federal government will help local initiatives in communities like Drumheller prevent crime - something all Albertans support," said Alberta Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security Harvey Cenaiko.   "The true driver of success in crime prevention is the dedication and hard work of Albertans committed to getting involved in their communities, to make them safer places to live, work, and raise families,” he added.

As part of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, the National Crime Prevention Center (NCPC) works to increase community action to prevent crime, develop and share knowledge of effective crime prevention strategies and coordinate multi-level support for crime prevention. The Government’s NCPC helps communities develop local solutions to local problems.
