Minister Day applauds RCMP and Canada Border Services Agency efforts to crack down on drug and organized crime

October 2, 2006 — Today, the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, released this statement following the arrest last week of eight individuals in Toronto in connection with two separate investigations involving an alleged cross-border Ecstasy trafficking ring, and a cocaine smuggling scheme at Pearson International Airport.

“Many Canadians are aware of the dangers associated with drug trafficking and the damage it can do to individuals and families. Our officers are on the front-line every day, working together to keep illegal drugs off the streets.

Last Thursday’s arrests demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to keeping our communities safe. These arrests also demonstrate that Canada’s new government is taking action to tackle crime. On behalf of the government and all Canadians, I would like to thank the RCMP and CBSA for their tireless efforts. It is not an easy task and once again they have risen to the challenge.

I would also like to note the excellent relationship that exists between Canadian and U.S. law enforcement agencies. The Ecstasy trafficking ring arrests clearly point to a level of cooperation that allows us to keep our borders open to legitimate trade and travel, but closed to crime.”
