October 5, 2006 – Today, the Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, released this statement following the Vancouver arrest last week of a 28-year-old Montreal man for possession of 127 semi-automatic guns: “This latest arrest will help keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of gangs and other organized criminal groups thanks to the ongoing efforts of our police officers. Their hard work demonstrates the commitment of Canada’s police community to ensuring the safety and security of Canadians and their families. When this new government was elected, we made tackling crime – with an emphasis on guns, gangs, and violence – a key priority. On behalf of all Canadians, I would like to thank the members of the B.C. Integrated Gang Task Force for their tireless and cooperative efforts to keep Canadians safe and secure. Canada’s new government is taking action to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals.” For further information: Mélisa Leclerc Director of Communications Office of the Honourable Stockwell Day Minister of Public Safety 613-991-2863
