Modernizing the Emergency Preparedness Act

First passed in 1988, the provisions of the Emergency Preparedness Act have not kept pace with contemporary risks or emergency management practices. Therefore the Government of Canada reviewed this legislation to improve its integrated, cross-jurisdictional approach to emergency planning and response, as well as national critical infrastructure protection and cyber security.

The review was conducted by PSEPC representatives in consultation with other federal departments and agencies, and provincial and territorial governments. PSEPC also consulted directly with private-sector stakeholders and other interested parties were welcome to participate in the consultations. Consultations ended in the fall of 2005. On November 17, 2005, the Emergency Management Act was introduced in Parliament to replace the Emergency Preparedness Act.
