Number: AV06-023 Date: 14 August 2006 PurposeThe purpose of this advisory is to bring attention to the following vulnerabilities in Symantec products: Symantec Backup Exec for Windows Server - RPC Interface Heap Overflow, Authorized User Potential Elevation of Privilege AssessmentA vulnerability was reported in Symantec (Veritas) Backup Exec. The Backup Exec for Windows Server and Remote Agents for Windows Server, also used by the Continuous Protection Server and Backup Exec for Netware Server, are vulnerable to heap overflows from specifically formatted internal network calls to RPC interfaces. Aremote authenticated user can send specially crafted data to trigger a heap overflow in the RPC interface and execute arbitrary code on the target system. The code will run with the privileges of the target service. Suggested actionPSEPC recommends that system administrators apply the latest security update as indicated for their supported product versions to protect against threats of this nature.
