BrightStor ARCserve Backup (Buffer Overrun)

Number: AV06-042
Date: 6 October 2006

Purpose

The purpose of this advisory is to bring attention to multiple vulnerabilities that exists in the "BrightStor ARCserve Backup" software from Computer Associates.

Assessment

Multiple overflow conditions have been found in the "BrightStor ARCserve Backup" products from Computer Associates. An attacker may be able to exploit the vulnerabilities by sending specially crafted requests to the "Backup Agent Service (DBASVR.exe)", the "Discovery Service" or the "Message Engine Service" that could potentially allow remote code execution. An attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system.

The following components are affected:

BrightStor Products

  • BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 SP1 and below (SP2 does not have this vulnerability)
  • BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.1
  • BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows r11
  • BrightStor Enterprise Backup 10.5
  • BrightStor ARCserve Backup v9.01
