The Property Improvement Initiative helps Aboriginal policing services with small property improvement projects that ensure facilities are appropriate for police operations. There are three categories of eligible projects: - Operational fit-ups, including minor alterations and improvements to make facilities functional in accordance with service delivery requirements
- Facility restoration, such as repairs and renovations in order to bring facilities to sound condition and to meet current codes and standards for special purpose space (i.e. cells)
- Temporary, transitional accommodation
All minor capital real property improvements are cost-shared with the provinces (52% federal, 48% provincial). The maximum federal contribution over the life of a project will not exceed $250,000. Funding available for minor capital projects is limited and will be allocated where the need is greatest on a case-by-case basis. Projects to correct safety hazards or to meet building codes will be given first priority. Projects to construct or acquire new, permanent facilities and facility expansion are not eligible. Funds provided for property improvement may not be used to acquire permanent facilities, sites or equipment. First Nations communities are invited to submit proposals outlining the scope, schedule, cost estimate and expenditure cash flow over the life of each project. This should be done in conjunction with an application for a new or existing policing agreement. Supporting documentation identifying the necessary facility improvements is required, along with a statement by the community concerning the intended long-term use of the facility.
