Biography

The chief grain inspector ensures that grain inspection, grading and certification programs, designed to preserve and enhance the quality and integrity of Canada's cereal grains, oilseeds and pulses, are maintained. He is responsible for developing the grain standards submitted annually to the western and eastern standards committees. The Winnipeg head office of the chief grain inspector directs grain inspection and grading across the five CGC regions.

Biography

The chief of weighing works with CGC and the grain industry to formulate policy and plan operations involving weighing of grain. The chief of weighing manages all weighing operations for the CGC and acts as a consultant and as the final recourse on all official weighing issues. The weighing program provides certification of weight on receipt and shipment and provides documentation for the investigation of complaints.

Biography

The CGC entomologist plans, coordinates and manages a national grain infestation and sanitation program. The entomologist acts as a resource for information on insect biology and ecology and initiates changes to regulations that assist in improving the system for monitoring grain cleanliness and infestation. The entomologist also conducts research on grain storage, the effectiveness of fumigation, and alternative insect control methods and strategies. Entomology staff conduct infestation analyses at five regional laboratories and satellite facilities. The regions implement the program in their area through intensive sampling and analysis of grain and the inspection of grain handling premises.

Biography

Industry Services Laboratory staff provide a wide variety of technical services. The coordinator develops the calibrations for CGC near-infrared (NIR) testing equipment used to measure protein and moisture content in cereal grains, oilseeds and pulses. Staff ensure all NIR instruments are operating within tolerances by monitoring test results and through a check sample program. They maintain a wide variety of mechanical and electronic equipment for the CGC, and provide a vomitoxin testing service.

Biography

The manager of inspector training and development coordinates staff training and the career development needs of inspection staff in all regions. Working with regional trainers, the manager identifies and develops national training policies, resource materials, and examination and technical performance standards. The inspector training and development staff provide information on variety registration, current grading issues and grading complaints. Staff provide instruction and demonstrations for tours in Canada and in foreign countries to promote Canada's grain inspection system.

Biography

The manager of quality assurance standards and reinspection directs the preparation and presentation to the Western and Eastern standards committees of grain standard samples used by CGC and industry grain inspectors. The Quality Assurance Standards and reinspection staff coordinate the evaluation of plant breeder lines for kernel visual distinguishability (KVD). The manager is responsible for coordinating, in collaboration with the industry, producers, and scientists, the continual evaluation of grade specifications and grading procedures and revising the Official Grain Grading Guide. The manager is also responsible for the CGC's reinspection program in which any person who is dissatisfied with the grade assigned to grain by an inspector on an official inspection of the grain can appeal that decision by applying for reinspection of the grain.

Biography

Scale Inspection, Audits and Samplers staff conduct all inspections of bulk weighing systems at licensed terminal and transfer elevators in accordance with the Weights and Measures Act and Regulations and with CGC requirements. Working with the Grain Elevator and Grain Dealer Licensing section of the CGC, they review plans for new grain elevator construction and changes to existing facilities, equipment or sampling systems. The coordinator is responsible for scheduling weighover audits at all licensed elevators.
