Grain Safety Assurance
Grain Research Laboratory

Eugene Gawalko obtained his Bachelor of Science in 1972 from the University of Manitoba. He started his career with the Province of Manitoba, Department of Water Resources in 1972 and joined the Environment Department as a Chemist in 1975.

His experience at the WM Ward Technical Services Laboratory covered a variety of programs for the province's environment and workplace safety and health departments. Specializing in atomic absorption spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma spectrometry, he was responsible for method development and the operation of the Trace Elements section in the WM Ward Laboratory.

In 1992, Eugene Gawalko joined the Canadian Grain Commission as chemist-in charge of the Trace Element laboratory. He is responsible for developing new methodologies for trace element analyses in cereal and oilseed grains. He developed techniques using open vessel focused microwave and closed vessel microwave digestion. The techniques were subsequently published in Journal of AOAC International in 1997. In August 2000, he organised and chaired the atomic spectrometry session at the 46th International Conference on Analytical Sciences and Spectroscopy at the University of Winnipeg. He was invited by the Journal of AOAC International to contribute to a special edition journal on quality assurance in analytical chemistry which was published in 2001.

Eugene Gawalko has been a member of the Mid-Canada AOAC International since 1986 and was elected president in 2000. He currently serves on the National Scientific Steering Committee for the Metals in the Holistic Environment Research Network which is funded by the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
