Tom Nowicki joined the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) in 1969 after graduating from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Science degree with specialization in chemistry. He has spent his entire career working in the area of grain safety assurance including many years developing innovative test methods for determining trace levels of toxic substances in grain. His analytical interests have focused on the use of gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatography and atomic absorption spectrometry. More recently, he is investigating rapid tests using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunoaffinity column techniques. He has contributed to numerous scientific publications and book chapters, represented the CGC on national and international committees and participated in several delegations to investigate and provide assistance on grain safety concerns in other countries. Tom Nowicki served as president of the Mid-Canada Regional Section of AOAC International in 1991-92 and 1998-99. In 1997 he was the first western Canadian recipient of the Caledon Award in recognition of his significant contributions to the analysis of grains for trace levels of toxic substances. Tom Nowicki is currently serving on AOAC International's methods committee on natural toxins and food allergens.
