Stephen Symons, PhD, CBiol, MIBiol

Stephen Symons joined the CGC in 1988 to create the Image Analysis unit after earning his doctorate in plant physiology at the University of London in 1982 and following two postdoctoral positions at the University of Saskatchewan and at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. During his time in Ottawa, he learned computer imaging related to grain quality. In addition to being program manager for Image Analysis, he is also section head for Quality Assurance instrumentation, representing image analysis, spectroscopy, seed biology and analytical services on the Grain Research Laboratory (GRL) management team. In 2002, he was appointed adjunct professor in the department of Biosystems Engineering of the University of Manitoba.

A Chartered Biologist, Stephen Symons received the CGC Bravo Award for innovation in 2000 and the Treasury Board of Canada Award of Excellence in 2001 for his work in developing imaging methods for grading lentils. He has an extensive number of publications in grain physiology and computer imaging.
