The Government of Canada's Youth Justice Renewal Initiative was launched in May 1998. Since then, progress has been made in
establishing a fair and effective youth justice system. The government's commitment to this Initiative is reflected in the $206
million that was allocated, in the 1999–2000 federal budget, for the implementation of the Initiative over its first three years
