The Geee! in Genome is a bilingual, national public education project that is designed to educate Canadians about genomics and its relevance to nature and human life. As well, it highlights the contributions of Canadian scientists working in the field, paying particular tribute to the late Dr. Michael Smith, the chemist who was also a Nobel laureate.

This innovative project was launched on April 25, 2003, which was the 50th anniversary of the first publication of the scientific description of the DNA double-helix structure.

A key component of the project is Canada's first exhibition on genomics. This special exhibition premiered at the Canadian Museum of Nature, and ran until September 1, 2003.

After its run at the Canadian Museum of Nature, this interactive, full-sized travelling exhibition embarked on a tour to science museums and centres across Canada.

A series of dynamic programmes complements the exhibition and encourages discussion and debate about this cutting-edge science. They are directed to either the general public or the educational community.

  • A series of interactive, fun and educational programmes for visitors explores DNA, genes and cloning.
  • A public forum series encourages audience participation and discussion with panels of researchers, ethicists and patients. Summaries of these forums are available online.
  • A host of curriculum-based school programmes include workshops, an Art & Writing Project, and forums for youth.

Two smaller travelling exhibitions in our Nature to Go! suitcase series, A Crash Course on Genomics, and Genetic Diseases and Heredity, pack a lot of learning onto two tabletops.

A dynamic Web site both complements and augments the exhibition. With games, videos, genomics resources and career information, the Web site strongly appeals to youth. Also, a wealth of resources has been developed for educators: lesson plans, national curriculum links, and pre- and post-visit activities. Public opinions on ethical issues, summaries of forums, location information, a Press Room, partner information and other links are also offered.
