Striking a BalanceLocated in Halifax, Nova Scotia, NRC-IBD (Atlantic) is a satellite lab of the NRC-IBD in Winnipeg, and was created as a result of the NRC's commitment to building capacity for regional innovation in Atlantic Canada. NRC-IBD (Atlantic) is representative of NRC's cluster strategy, which focuses on linking existing local strengths and opportunities in emerging sectors to its core R&D capacities. NRC-IBD (Atlantic) is one of the driving forces behind the development of neuroscience clusters (e.g. the Brain Repair Centre) in Atlantic Canada and is a collaborative partner with Dalhousie University, the Queen Elizabeth II (QEII) Health Sciences Centre, the Izaak Walton Killam Hospital (IWK), and NRC's Institute for Marine Biosciences (NRC-IMB). State-of-the-Art Equipment and FacilitiesNRC-IBD (Atlantic) equipment includes a high field 4 Tesla (T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, a 64 channel electroencephalograph (EEG), and a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in the 7,000 square foot Neuroimaging Research Laboratory (NRL) at the QEII. IBD (Atlantic) also has a 3T animal MRI in the 2000 square foot MRI Lab at the IWK. The new Biomedical MRI Research Laboratory (BMRL), approximately 2000 square feet and housed at the IWK site, hosts a 3T horizontal bore magnet for small animal MRI and a 7T vertical bore magnet. Construction is underway, and the lab will be completed this Fall. Research ActivitiesThe research at NRC-IBD (Atlantic) focuses primarily on studies of brain function using a variety of different approaches. Ongoing projects are directed at improving neurological models and assessment of cognition through the use of MRI and EEG, developing and monitoring biomaterials for implantation, and integrating computational modeling and brain imaging methods further. Who can Access the NRL?Investigators with novel research ideas involving imaging are encouraged to contact the NRL. The primary mission of NRC-IBD (Atlantic) is to foster collaborative research within the neuroscience community in Atlantic Canada. While work in the lab focuses on neuroscience, the applications of this technology are not limited to the brain. The 4T MRI is a whole body system and, with the appropriate radio frequency coils, can accommodate a variety of other body imaging applications. |
