The Transgenic Plant Centre (TPC)
The Transgenic Plant Centre (TPC) was established to provide expertise and facilities for the production and assessment of plants developed through collaborative projects. These facilities are leased, on a cost-recovery basis, to partner organizations engaged in assessment of the commercial value of transgenic plants produced through genetic transformation, pure breeding (doubled haploid) lines produced through microspore culture experiments, and plants produced through other biotechniques. It is located in the Kristjanson Biotechnology Complex in Innovation Place.
Expertise
- greenhouse management from germination through harvest
- microspore culture and mutagenesis technology
- plant regeneration technologies nutraceutical and specialty crops
- maintenance of in vitro cell, shoot and plantlet cultures
- Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer procedures
Facilities
- 6000 square feet of secure, automated, climate-controlled, greenhouse space
- chambers for precise, computerized control of plant growth conditions
- tissue culture rooms and incubators for in vitro maintenance of transgenic shoots and haploid lines
- laboratories for cell culture and gene transfer experiments
