Measurement

International trade requires equivalent, precise measurement standards among buyer and seller nations. NRC works with industry to break down technical barriers to trade and make Canadian products more competitive in the global marketplace.

The NRC is Canada's primary centre of reference for the accuracy, validity and traceability of physical measurements and appropriate chemical measurements.

Selenium is one of the most commonly used mineral supplements, believed to play a role in preventing cancer and mitigating oxidative stress. Scientists from the NRC-Institute of National Measurement Standards (NRC-INMS) worked with Montréal biotech firm Institut Rosell-Lallemand, to develop a way to measure how much selenomethionine, an amino acid, is present in selenized yeast, making it easier to trade the product across international borders and for consumers to know how much selenium they're getting in their supplements.
