Public Consultations Process

Public hearings regarding the review of federal labour standards were held in September and October 2005 in 13 cities across the country.

The Commission heard a broad range of views and opinions from a wide array of interested parties on issues related to its mandate. In each city, consultations were conducted by Commissioner Harry Arthurs, expert advisors and/or senior staff of the Review.

Those who wished to send written submissions and comments on issues falling within the mandate of the Review could do so before October 31, 2005. However, if you wish to send a written submission to the Review, please contact us by phone (1-866-660-0344) or e-mail (info@fls-ntf.gc.ca).

How to Participate in the Formal Public Hearings

Groups and individuals who wish to voice their opinions at a public hearing must fill out and send a registration form at least 3 weeks before the hearing at which they wish to appear. It would also be preferable to send a written submission within that time frame.

To register for the public hearings:

  • Fill out the electronic form or send us an e-mail providing the requested information at consultations@fls-ntf.gc.ca; or
  • Fill out the form (available in PDF format) and send it by mail or fax to:

    Federal Labour Standards Review
    165 Hotel de Ville
    Phase II, Place du Portage
    Gatineau, Quebec
    K1A 0J2

    Fax: (819) 956-7521

  • Please indicate in the registration form if you have any special needs that may make accessibility or communication difficult at a hearing, and what type of accommodation you would require. All venues for the public hearings will be wheelchair accessible.

Although the Commission would like to hear the views of every interested group and individual, please note that due to time constraints it might not be able to invite everyone who wants to make a presentation at the formal public hearings.

Confirmations to participants and a schedule of presentations will be sent about 10 to 14 days before each public hearing. To accommodate as many speakers as possible, each individual or group invited to speak at the formal hearings will have a maximum of approximately 10 minutes to make a presentation, followed by a brief question period. Please note that the public hearings will be recorded.

Other Ways of Participating

All public consultations will be open to the public. Staff from the Review will be available to assist those who wish to make a written submission and to record verbal comments in a less formal setting.

Those who do not intend to participate at a public hearing are encouraged to send a written submission. The deadline to do so is October 31, 2005. All submissions may be sent via regular mail, e-mail or fax. Please refer to the Submission section of this website as well as the consultation paper for additional details.
