Victim Services
Have you been affected by a crime? Or are you wanting to help support a victim of crime?
The Victim Services Branch provides help for victims dealing with a range of different crimes.
It doesn’t matter if the crime has been reported, a charge has been laid, or the accused has been convicted. We provide services to all people affected by a crime.
What Victim Services does:
- Provide crisis support (no appointment needed).
- Help victims understand their options.
- Share information about the court process, including how victims can participate.
- Inform victims about their rights.
- Provide support and information for victims throughout the criminal justice process, as needed.
- Help victims develop a safety plan
, apply for protective court orders and prepare Victim Impact Statements. - Help victims get support from other agencies.
- Provide emergency practical support (VCEF).
Our services are confidential
Victim Services won’t tell you what you have to do. Normally, we also won't discuss your situation with anyone else without your knowledge and permission. However, sometimes we are required by law to inform others (such as if the victim is under 19, or a crime is about to be committed).
Our staff can help you through a difficult time. We will listen and provide the information you need.
Who Victim Services works with
We work with a diversity of victims of crime. For example, we work with victims of domestic and sexual assault, criminal harassment (stalking), physical violence & threats, property crimes & theft, and impaired driving.
People who witness a crime are also victims who may come to us for support and information.
We also work with family, friends and other service providers who support people affected by crime.
We know that each person affected by a crime has a unique experience and different needs.
When you can contact Victim Services
You can contact us at any time: right after the crime or days, weeks or months later. It’s up to you.
However, the earlier you get in touch, the more options we may be able to offer.
Our office is open 8:00-4:30, Monday to Friday. You can call us or drop by (no appointment required).
After hours you can get help by calling VictimLink toll free: 1-800-563-0808. They will provide support, answer your questions and help you find options in your community.
If it is an emergency, call VictimLink or your local RCMP detachment.
