Submission
I wish to submit the following request to the Federal Labout Standards Review committee: Currently the maximum number of hours per week an employee may work is capped at 48, I wish to request that that number be raised or removed. In today's economic market sometimes 48 hours is not enough to make ends meet. The interesting thing with this regulation is that it does not cap the number of jobs an individual may hold. If you were to hold two jobs in order to make ends meet, which many do, you may not exceed the 48 hour maximum at either job, but you could certainly work more than 48 hours. Having to work two jobs may be to some peoples liking, but it is also potentially dangerous. With conflicting schedules and the time required to commute between jobs and home creating further pressures on an individual individual in this situation, it may be beneficial to have the ability to work additional hours at one job. I work for a US air carrier in Calgary, and with the current state of the airline industry, especially the US side, it is difficult for me and the majority of my coworkers to be faced the 48 hour limit. We need to be able to work additional hours, and it is easier to do it at our main place of employment. We are a 24 hour a day operation and our shifts are normally a variety of hours all over the clock. Having to secure a second job that will more than likely have more normal hours, while maintaining this job would be very troublesome. We are non-union airport employees, and our company follows this guideline very stringently. Please take this request into consideration and advise if I need to take further action. Thank you for your time. Sincerely,
