Controlled Goods Directorate - CGD REGISTRATION

Individuals are eligible to register with the CGD provided they consent to a security assessment and are ordinarily resident in Canada as either a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident.

Businesses are eligible to register with the CGD provided they are incorporated or authorized by federal, provincial or territorial law to carry on business in Canada.

To be excluded from registration, you must be employed by a Canadian federal, provincial or territorial government or a federal Crown corporation, and deal with controlled goods and/or controlled technology in the performance of your official duties.

To be exempted from registration, you must be a visitor to Canada, a temporary worker, a United States government official, or an employee of a business in the United States that is registered with the International Traffic and Arms Regulations (ITAR).

For the purpose of the CGD, the following goods and/or technology in the Export Control List are considered controlled and requires registration with the CGD.

How to register with the Controlled Goods Directorate

Individuals or businesses that are eligible to register with the CGD must complete an Application for Registration and submit it along with a Security Assessment application for each proposed Designated Official.

Visitors that are eligible for exemption from registration with the CGD must complete an Application for Exemption from Registration. The Designated Official of the Registered Person for which the visitor will be visiting must submit the application to the CGD prior to his visit. A visitor is not permitted to access controlled goods and/or controlled technology until a Certificate of Exemption from Registration is issued by the CGD. Temporary workers that are eligible for exemption from registration with the CGD must complete an Application for Exemption from Registration and a Security Assessment application for a temporary worker. The Designated Official of the Registered Person for which the temporary worker will be employed must submit these applications to the CGD prior to his employment. A temporary worker is not permitted to access controlled goods and/or controlled technology until a Certificate of Exemption from Registration is issued by the CGD.
