PWGSC's newsletter on current developments in the Controlled Goods Program (CGP) affecting Canadian business

New policies on the Web site

Visit the Important Documents section of our Web site at www.cgp.gc.ca to view our new policy guidelines on the following topics: security assessments by the CGP, compliance inspections, and temporary worker exemptions and security assessments.

Do you do business with contractual workers?

There is a new policy guideline available on our Web site on contractual workers. This policy will provide assistance to Registered Persons in determining when contractual workers must be registered with the CGP or when they can be dealt solely by the Registered Person's security plan.

 New forms

We are pleased to introduce CGP's new application form, along with an instruction kit. The application form can be used to register with the CGP, apply for renewal or amend information supplied to the CGP. Furthermore, a newly redesigned security assessment application is now available for designated officials and sole proprietors. Both applications can be found in the Forms section of our Web site.

Amendments to the Controlled Goods Regulations (CGR)

Amendments have been made to the CGR in regards to Canadian and United States government officials, and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) Registered Persons. Specifically, Canadian and United States government officials are no longer required to register with the CGP and ITAR Registered Persons must provide further evidence to the Canadian Registered Person's Designated Official to access controlled goods and/or technology within Canada. To learn more about these amendments, visit the Controlled Goods Regulations section of our Web site.

Important Update

Do you receive foreign visitors at your business site?

To access controlled goods and/or technology in Canada, foreign visitors require an exemption from the CGP. Visitor Applications for Exemption from Registration must be submitted for approval at least two weeks prior to the visits. A recent policy guideline on visitor exemptions is now available on our Web site.

Renewals and security plans

The renewal process has already started. You will receive a renewal letter two months prior to the expiry of your existing registration. You must submit your renewal application form, along with a copy of your security plan(s) to renew your registration. Visit the Important Documents section of our Web site at www.cgp.gc.ca to view our Policy Guideline on Security Plans.

What's new?

Designated Officials can now obtain confirmation of an employees' security clearance by contacting representatives of the Call Center at 1 866 368-4646.

 Important notice

It is your responsibility to ensure the legal transfer of controlled goods. The Registration Search page on the CGP Web site is a valuable tool to verify a company's registration with the CGP. Be sure to consult this page whenever doing business with a company.

 Future features

The next issue will have information on the newly redesigned CGP Web site, as well as on the latest policy guidelines and the development of best practices.
