 INFORMATION FOR DESIGNATED OFFICIALS

Q- Who is eligible to become a Designated Official?

A- There are two associated conditions. The proposed Designated Official must consent to a security assessment and must be either:

  1. a Canadian citizen ordinarily resident in Canada; or,
  2. a permanent resident who is ordinarily resident in Canada.

Q- How will I know if the Designated Official that I propose is approved?

A- CGD will notify an applicant for registration or a Registered Person of the acceptance of, or the reasons for the rejection of, a proposed Designated Official. Top

Q- What are the duties of a Designated Official?

A- Designated Officials are responsible for:

  1. in respect of each officer, director and employee who is not a temporary worker of the Registered Person who requires in the course of their duties access to controlled goods,
    1. conducting, with the consent of the individual concerned, a security assessment in accordance with Section 15 of the Controlled Goods Regulations;
    2. determining, on the basis of a security assessment, the extent to which the individual concerned poses a risk of transferring controlled goods to any person who is not registered or exempt from registration;
    3. making and keeping, on the basis of the security assessment, an evaluation as to the honesty, reliability and trustworthiness of the individual concerned; and
    4. authorising, in respect of those individuals concerned who have been evaluated as being honest, reliable and trustworthy, the extent to which they may examine, possess or transfer controlled goods;
  2. submitting applications for exemptions to the Minister in respect of temporary workers or visitors in accordance with Section 18 of the Controlled Goods Regulations.
