Bringing Expertise to Canada “We worked hard in Mexico to gain the education and skills to succeed,” says Carlos. “At the same time, we started our family and tried to take advantage of opportunities.” One of those opportunities helped them develop a new implantable device, a stent that improves doctors’ ability to clear blocked arteries. At the time, the couple had a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter and another child on the way. As they researched countries, they sought the most suitable place to make this project happen. “I looked at what would be best for my two little ones and my wife Elsie,” says Carlos. “I wanted a country where newcomers were given the opportunity to work hard, to establish themselves and prosper in a multicultural society—a country respected around the world not because of a military presence but because of true greatness. The choice was easy—it was Canada.” It was a long process and there were many forms to fill out, but the family’s acceptance as landed immigrants was cause for celebration. Moving also meant searching for a place to live, working to improve language skills and adjusting to different foods and the cost of living. Even in mild British Columbia, the weather was a bit of a shock compared to warm Mexico. “We have seen our lives blossom, however,” says Carlos. “One of our daughters speaks Spanish, English and French and her little sister is following suit. The medical device project that originally brought us to Canada has been successfully developed and now has approval for use in Europe.” Canada has benefited from the choices made by Carlos’ family to bring their expertise here, and the family has contributed even further by becoming citizens. Carlos told their story at a citizenship ceremony in Vancouver on Canada Day 2006 as he spoke of the honour they felt in becoming citizens of a great country.
