An individual can legally change their name by reason of marriage, adoption, divorce, annulment, separation in marriage or legal name change.

When an individual requests to change the name on Government of Canada Retail Debt Instruments (bonds), we require one of the documents listed in either Option 1 or Option 2, as set out below.

Option 1
A marriage certificate: the original or a certified copy prepared by a Notary Public, a Lawyer, a Court Official, a Commissioner for Oaths or a financial institution.
An Adoption Order, a Divorce Order, an Annulment Order, a Marriage Separation Agreement, a legal name change: the original or a certified copy prepared by a Notary Public, a Lawyer or a Court Official.

NOTE: The original document will be returned upon request only. Please indicate on your correspondence if you wish to have your documents returned to you.

Option 2
Paragraph spacer
A letter of guarantee from a financial institution which must:
be presented on either the institution's letterhead or on paper that bears the institution's identification stamp
be dated
indicate both the original registration as well as the new registration
indicate two of the following statements:
(The presenter) undertakes to indemnify the Bank of Canada from and against all losses and damages resulting from this request.
(The two or more names) refer to one and the same person.
The reason for the change in name (e.g. marriage, divorce).
There is no change in ownership.
contain the bond owner's address and Social Insurance Number for tax reporting purposes
be signed by an authorized representative of the financial institution

The Government of Canada Retail Debt Instrument(s), if applicable, the legal document (option 1) or the letter of guarantee (option 2) and any other applicable documents should be sent to the:

If the first option is chosen and there are variations in names between the legal document and the name(s) appearing on the Government of Canada Retail Debt Instruments, we will require a letter of guarantee from a financial institution, on their letterhead, stating that the name appearing on the document and the name(s) on the Government of Canada Retail Debt Instruments refer to one and the same person (e.g., Joan Elizabeth Mary Smith and Joan Elizabeth Smith refer to one and the same person).
